Taking advantage of its perch high atop a hillside in Covington’s Devou Park, Children’s Home of Northern Kentucky annually holds a Labor Day weekend fireworks party. In past years, the party has been used more as a ‘friend’-raiser than a fundraiser. We believe there’s a way to accomplish both, though – to build bridges with folks in the community while also raising critically-needed funds for our organization. So in 2011, the CHNK Development team revamped the party.
The sprawling front lawn of the Home’s Covington campus, overlooking the Ohio River and downtown Covington and Cincinnati, provides a prime viewing area for the WEBN fireworks display. It can comfortably hold hundreds of guests and their vehicles. Overflow parking is also available for no cost at the Behringer Crawford Museum, just a short walk down the road from the Home.
Once on the CHNK grounds, guests have a variety of food and beverage options available for purchase, including grilled chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, bratwursts, soda, water, beer, and wine. The Home also offers “fun food,” such as popcorn, ice cream, snow cones, cotton candy, and nachos, for the young and young at heart.
Face painting, balloon animals, and other activities entertain the children in attendance, while live music prior to the fireworks is performed for adults. When the fireworks begin, the soundtrack is simulcast across the lawn through a professional sound system.
We know other fireworks parties are held each year by local businesses with similar views of the riverfront. Our event, however, is the only one where your admission price has a direct and immediate impact on the hundreds of abused, neglected, and at-risk children and families we serve every year at the Home. Mark your calendar for next year’s event, and join us for the Labor Day weekend party!
