Established in 1935, the Junior Board at Children’s Home of Northern Kentucky has one goal: to provide hope and opportunity to the youth in CHNK’s residential treatment program.
The individuals who comprise today’s Junior Board are no longer the wives of (male) members of the Home’s Board of Trustees. They are now business professionals, entrepreneurs, activists, parents, and philanthropists making time in their busy 21st century schedules to put the needs of a hurting child on their priority list. They do this in multiple ways:
- Throughout the year, the Junior Board works closely with CHNK’s activities coordinator and recreation therapist to make sure the youth in residential treatment have experiences that help create a sense of normalcy. Junior Board members coordinate holiday parties, basketball tournaments, summer picnics, and fall festivals. They hand deliver birthday cards and treats. They join the residents for Thanksgiving dinner, often serving as the only ‘family’ in attendance with them. In short, they add a nurturing aspect to what can be a very clinical treatment program.
- The Junior Board also coordinates one of the longest running fundraising events in the Greater Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky area – the Charity Ball. First held as a garden party in 1935 – and held every consecutive year other than 1937 (when the tri-state was dealing with widespread flooding of the Ohio River) – the event has evolved into a black-tie gala of movers and shakers from across the region who have come together to be social for a cause. Event proceeds directly support residential treatment services, and specifically CHNK’s recreation therapy program.
- As CHNK participates in community events throughout the year, Junior Board members assist the CHNK Office for Development in bridge building with the wider community. Whether it’s a Memorial Day Parade, an agency recognition event at a Reds game, or a local music festival, Junior Board members (and often, their families!) show up to help raise awareness for CHNK and the youth in its care.
Interested In Joining
The Junior Board?
Junior Board members meet monthly, typically at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month. Meetings are primarily held at CHNK’s Covington campus. Members make an annual $50.00 tax-deductible donation to CHNK to cover group expenses and activities. And despite the name – which, in the 1930s made sense since it was a “junior” board to the higher-ranking Board of Trustees – there are no age (or gender) requirements for membership.
Become a part of the Junior Board legacy. For more information on joining, contact the CHNK Office for Development at 859.292.4135 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
